How to set the cutting speed of a metallographic cutting machine reasonably?

The cutting speed setting of the metallographic cutting machine needs to be comprehensively determined by combining material characteristics, cutting blade type, and sample requirements.
For soft metals such as copper and aluminum, the cutting speed can be appropriately increased because of their good plasticity and ease of cutting; higher speeds can improve efficiency, and the feed rate can generally be controlled between 0.1-0.5mm/s. However, excessively high speeds may lead to sample deformation, requiring sufficient cooling.
Hard metals such as quenched steel and cemented carbide require a reduction in cutting speed, with feed rates typically between 0.01-0.1mm/s to avoid excessive wear of the cutting blade or overheating of the sample; in these cases, high-hardness cutting blades should be selected and cooling should be strengthened.
When cutting thin-slice samples, the speed should not be too fast to prevent sample vibration from affecting precision; for thick samples, the speed can be appropriately increased provided that precision is guaranteed. In addition, a lower speed can be adopted in the initial stage for a newly replaced cutting blade, and then adjusted to the normal speed once operation is stable.
