What is the difference between a microhardness tester HMV and a nanohardness tester?
Microhardness testers (HMV) and nanoindenters are both devices used to measure the hardness of materials, but they differ in several aspects.
From the perspective of testing scale, the testing scale of microhardness testers is generally at the micrometer level, suitable for measuring the hardness of small areas of larger dimensions or bulk materials; while the testing scale of nanoindenters can reach the nanometer level, enabling more precise measurement of the hardness of nanometer-scale structures such as material surfaces or thin films.
In terms of testing principle, microhardness testers mainly use Vickers or Knoop indenters, calculating hardness by measuring indentation dimensions; nanoindenters, on the other hand, usually use spherical or conical indenters, determining hardness by measuring the relationship between indentation depth and load, a method also known as nanoindentation. In addition, nanoindenters have higher requirements for environmental control of the equipment, and the precision and stability of the indenter, with relatively higher equipment costs.
