What should I do if a sample has cracks after being mounted using a metallographic mounting machine?

The appearance of cracks in samples after mounting with a metallographic mounting machine will affect subsequent metallographic analysis, and it is necessary to identify the causes and solve them.
On one hand, it may be due to problems with the sample itself; if the sample has internal stress, defects, or uneven structures, these internal issues may trigger cracks under the influence of heat and pressure during the mounting process. In this case, ensure the cutting process is correct when cutting samples to reduce the stress generated by cutting, or pre-treat the samples, such as annealing, to eliminate internal stress.
On the other hand, improper setting of mounting parameters may also lead to the generation of cracks. If the temperature is too high or the heating rate is too fast, the difference in thermal expansion coefficients between the sample and the mounting material will generate significant thermal stress, thereby triggering cracks; in such cases, the temperature should be appropriately reduced or the heating rate slowed down.
Excessive pressure may also cause the sample to crack due to over-compression, so pressure parameters must be adjusted reasonably. In addition, inappropriate selection of mounting materials, such as incompatibility with the sample, may also lead to cracks; it is necessary to select suitable mounting materials based on the characteristics of the sample.
