Influence of the specimen itself: When the specimen material has obvious texture characteristics, the shape of the indentation will be irregular; the location of the indentation within a single grain, such as inside the grain, near the grain boundary, or near the second phase, will all influence the measured results; if the measured grain is extremely thin, the indentation will sink into the grains beneath it; for deformed specimens, attention should be paid to the longitudinal and transverse sections; even for single-phase alloys, differences in orientation from one grain to another will also reflect discrepancies.
Influence of specimen processing methods: Mechanical polishing has a significant impact on microhardness values. This is because small plastic deformations occur on the surface layer during polishing, and a very thin amorphous layer may also be generated on the surface. Therefore, the microhardness values measured by mechanical polishing are higher than those measured by electropolishing. This is even more apparent at low loads (less than 10 grams).
